Lecture de l’Epître

1Cor XI : 8-23

11.8 En effet, l'homme n'a pas été tiré de la femme, mais la femme a été tirée de l'homme; 11.9
et l'homme n'a pas été créé à cause de la femme, mais la femme a été créée à cause de
l'homme.

Jésus, et dit: 17.15 Seigneur, aie pitié de mon fils, qui est lunatique, et qui souffre cruellement;

Man.

SAINTS BASILE ET CONSTANTIN, PRINCES DE YAROSLAV (+13°.S.)
The Repose of Nobleborn Princes Vasilii and Konstantin Vsevolodovich of Yaroslavsk: In
their youth they lost their father, Vsevolod, who fell in battle with the Tatars (Mongols). Saint
Vasilii, the elder brother, succeeded to the throne. A multitude of concerns, tasks and sorrows
beset him as prince. The city and the villages were devastated from the invasion of the Tatars,
many households remained without shelter and food, and he had to concern himself about
everything and about everyone. Besides this, it was necessary to gain the good-will of the
Tatar khan, and the holy prince more than once made journey for this reason to the Horde. He

suffered also a family misfortune – the loss of his only son. All his tribulations the holy prince
suffered without complaint, and he ruled the princedom, like a true Christian: he did not enter
into disputes with other princes, he concerned himself over the misfortunate among his
subjects, and he built churches. But soon his life, filled with many sorrows, exhausted the
strength of the prince, and he took sick and died in the year 1249. After him holy Prince
Konstantin succeeded to the throne. He strove to imitate his brother, but to his great dismay,
everywhere he saw pillage and murdering done by the Tatars. In 1257 the Tatars fell upon
Yaroslavl' itself. The prince came out to fight the enemy, but here in this battle he gave up his
life for his country. In the year 1501 the relics of the holy princes were uncovered undecayed
and now rest in the Yaroslavsk cathedral.

Saint George the God-bearer and Recluse labored in the Black Mountains near Antioch during
a time when the churches and monasteries there flourished. Orthodox Christians from many
parts of the world came to settle there, and as a result, tensions often arose between monks of
different nationalities. In order to remain detached from the conflicts, Fr. George found refuge
in an impregnable cleft of a very high mountain. For this reason he is also called St. George
the Recluse.

Nevertheless, the monks of the Black Mountains were well aware of the pious life led by
George the Recluse. Venerable George of the Holy Mountain journeyed to the Black

Mountains in search of a spiritual guide and, after praying in each and every monastery,
finally asked St. George the Recluse, “a man innocent as a dove,” to fill this role.

George the Recluse received the young ascetic and found a home for him in the monastery.
His disciple remained with him for three years, leading the strictest ascetic life, until finally
George the Recluse clothed him with the schema and “perfected him in the monastic life.”

Then, after sending him on a pilgrimage to Jerusalem, he blessed George to resettle at the
Iveron Monastery on Mt. Athos and to continue the holy work of St. Ekvtime of Mt. Athos.

George returned to the Holy Mountain but, instead of translating books as his spiritual father
had advised him, he performed other obediences for seven years. When St. George the
Recluse heard this, he sent his disciple Theodore to Mt. Athos to rebuke him and remind him
that he was sent there to translate theological texts from the Greek to the Georgian language.
This time George of the Holy Mountain humbly obeyed the will of his teacher.

When he was not with George of the Holy Mountain, St. George the Recluse confined himself
to strict solitude and, like his spiritual son, dedicated much of his time to literary pursuits. He
was closely acquainted with the writers of Iveron and other Georgian monasteries, and he
encouraged his spiritual son to continue his labor of translating Orthodox theological
literature.

St. George the Recluse copied Davit Mtbevari’s translations of the Life of Martha (the mother
of Simeon of the Wonderful Mountain) and the Life of St. Barlaam (of the Syro-Caucasus).
When George heard that no copies of these Lives existed on Mt. Athos, he transcribed the
texts and sent them to the Athonites.

St. George the God-bearer and Recluse reposed in 1068, after the death of his venerable
disciple St. George of the Holy Mountain.

SAINT TIRECHAN (+7°.S.)

Christ.

SAINT HIEROMARTYR PHILIPPE METROPOLITE DE MOSCOU (+1569)

9 janvier (martyre) – 5 avril (repos) -31 mai (translation) -3 juillet (translation)

TRANSLATION DES RELIQUES DE SAINT PHILIPPE, METROPOLITE DE MOSCOU ET

Sainted Philip, Metropolitan of Moscow, in the world Feodor (Theodore), was descended
from the illustrious boyar-noble lineage of the Kolychevi, occupying a prominent place in the
Boyar duma at the court of the Moscow sovereigns. He was born in the year 1507. His father,
Stepan Ivanovich, "a man enlightened and filled with military spirit," attentively prepared his
son for government service. Pious Varvara (Barbara), the mother of Feodor, who ended her
days in monasticism with the name Varsonophia, implanted in the soul of her son a sincere
faith and deep piety. Young Feodor Kolychev applied himself diligently to the Holy Scripture
and to the books of the holy fathers, upon which the old Russian enlightenment rested, then
transpiring within the Church and in the spirit of the Church. The Moscow Greatprince,
Vasilii III Ioannovich, the father of Ivan the Terrible, brought young Feodor into the court,
but he was not however attracted to court life. Conscious of its vanity and sinfulness, Feodor
all the more deeply immersed himself in the reading of books and visiting the churches of
God. Life in Moscow repelled the young ascetic. The sincere devotion to him of the young
prince Ivan, presaging a great future for him in government service, could not hold in check
within the earthly city his searching out of the Heavenly City.

On Sunday, 5 June 1537, in church for Divine Liturgy, Feodor felt intensely in his soul the
words of the Saviour: "No one is able to serve two masters" (Mt. 6: 24), which determined his
ultimate destiny. Praying fervently to the Moscow wonderworkers, and without bidding
farewell to kinsfolk, he secretly in the attire of a common person left Moscow, and for a
certain while he hid himself away from the world in the village of Khizna, near Lake Onega,
earning his livelihood as a shepherd. His thirst for ascetic deeds led him to the reknown
Solovetsk monastery on the White Sea. There he fulfilled quite toilsome obediences: he
chopped firewood, dug the ground, and worked in the mill. After a year and an half of testing,
the hegumen Aleksei, at the wish of Feodor tonsured him, giving him the monastic name
Philip and entrusting him in obedience to the starets-elder Jona Shamina, who conversed with
the Monk Alexander Svirsk (+ 1533, Comm. 30 August). Under the guidance of the
experienced elders the Monk Philip grew spiritually, and strengthened in fasting and prayer.
Hegumen Aleksei sent him in obedience to work at the monastery black-smith forge, where
Saint Philip combined the activity of unceasing prayer amidst his working with an heavy
hammer. At the beginning of the service in church he always appeared first and was the last to
leave. He toiled also in the bakery, where the humble ascetic was comforted with an heavenly
Sign. In the monastery afterwards they displayed the "Bakery" image of the Mother of God,
through which the heavenly Mediatrix bestowed Her blessing upon the humble baker-monk
Philip. With the blessing of the hegumen, Saint Philip spent a certain while in wilderness
solitude, attending to himself and to God.

In 1546 at Novgorod the Great, archbishop Theodosii consecrated Philip as hegumen of the
Solovetsk monastery. The new-made hegumen strove with all his might to exalt the spiritual
significance of the monastery and its founders – the Monk Savvatii and Zosima of Solovetsk
(Comm. 27 September, 17 April). He searched out the Hodegetria image of the Mother of
God brought to the island by the original first head of Solovetsk, the Monk Savvatii; he
located the stone cross which once stood before the cell of the monk. Found also was the
Psalter, belonging to the Monk Zosima (+ 1478), the first hegumen of Solovetsk, and his robe,
in which from that time hegumens would vest during service on the days of memory of the
wonderworker. The monastery was revived spiritually. For regulating life at the monastery, a
new ustav (monastic rule) was adopted. Saint Philip built on Solovetsk majestic temples – a
refectory church of the Uspenie (Dormition) of the Mother of God, consecrated in the year
1557, and a church of the Transfiguration (Preobrazhenie) of the Lord. The hegumen himself
worked as a simple labourer, helping to lay the walls of the Transfiguration church. Beneathe
the north portico he dug himself a grave, alongside that of his guide, the starets Jona. Spiritual
life in these years blossomed at the monastery: asceticising amidst the brethren amongst the
students of Hegumen Philip were the Monks John and Longin of Yarengsk (Comm. 3 July)
and Vassian and Jona of Pertominsk (Comm. 12 July).

For his efforts of secret prayer Saint Philip often withdrew for quiet to a desolate wilderness
spot, two versts from the monastery, which received afterwards the name the Philippov
wilderness.

But the Lord was preparing the Saint for other service and other work. At Moscow Ivan the
Terrible remembered fondly about the Solovetsk hermit from the time of his childhood years.
The tsar hoped to find in Saint Philip a true companion, confessor and counsellor, who
through his exalted monastic life would have nothing in common with the sedition of the
boyar-nobles. The holiness of the metropolitan, in the opinion of Ivan the Terrible ought to be
of a certain spiritual meekness to quell the treachery and malice, nesting itself within the
Boyar soul. The choice of such an arch-hierarch for the Russian Church seemed to him the

best possible.

The Saint for a long time refused to take upon himself the great burden of primate of the
Russian Church. He did not sense any spiritual affinity with Ivan. He attempted to urge the
tsar to abolish the Oprichniki [the tsar internal terror shock troops]. Ivan the Terrible
attempted to argue its civil necessity. Finally, the dread tsar and the holy metropolitan came to
an agreement, that Saint Philip would not meddle in the affairs of the Oprichniki and the
running of the government, he would not resign as metropolitan in case, if the tsar be not able
to fulfill his wishes, and that he would be a support and counsellor of the tsar, just as former
metropolitans were supports for the Moscow sovereigns. On 25 July 1566 occurred the
consecration of Saint Philip to the cathedra-seat of the Moscow Sainted-hierarchs, whose
number he was soon to join.

Ivan the Terrible, one of the greatest and most contradictory figures in Russian history, lived
an intensely busy life, he was a talented writer and bibliophile [i.e. lover of books], he
involved himself in the compilation of the Chronicles (and himself suddenly sundered the
thread of the Moscow chronicle-writing), he delved into the intricacies of the monastic ustav
(rule), and more than once thought about monasticism and abdicating the throne. Every aspect
of governmental service, all the abrupt measures undertaken by him for a setting to root
restructuring of civil and social life, Ivan the Terrible tried to rationalise as a manifestation of
Divine Providence, as the acting of God within history. His beloved spiritual heroes were
Saint Michael of Chernigov (Comm. 20 September) and Saint Theodore (Feodor) the Black
(Comm. 19 September), military men active with a complex contradictory destiny, moving on
towards their sacred ends through whatever the hindrances rising up afront them, and
fulfilling their duties to the Rodina (Native-land) and Holy Church. The more the darkness
thickened around Ivan the Terrible, the more resolutely he demanded of his soul cleansing and
redemption. Journeying on pilgrimage to the Kirillo-Belozersk monastery, he declared his
wish to the hegumen and the gathered elders to be made a monk. The haughty autocrat fell on
his knees to the hegumen, and that one blessed his intent. All his life from that time, wrote
Ivan the Terrible, "it seems to me, an accursed sinner, that halfways I am already blackrobed."
The Oprichnina was itself conceived of by Ivan the Terrible in the form of a monastic
brotherhood: serving God with weapon and military deeds, the Oprichniki were required to
dress in monastic garb and go to church service, long and tiring, lasting from 4 to 10 o'clock
in the morning. Upon "brethren," not appearing at 4 o'clock in the morning, the tsar imposed a
penance. Ivan himself with his sons sought fervently to pray and sing in the church choir.
From church they went on to refectory (meal), and while the Oprichniki ate, the tsar stood
alongside them. The remaining food the Oprichniki gathered from the table and distributed to
the poor at the doorway of their refectory (dining hall). Ivan the Terrible, with tears of
repentance and wanting to be an esteemer of the holy ascetics – the teachers of repentance, he
wanted to wash and burn away his own sins and those of his companions, cherishing the
assurance, that even the terrible cruel actions would rebound for him to the welfare of Russia
and the triumph of Orthodoxy. The most clearly spiritual action and monastic sobriety of Ivan
the Terrible is revealed in his "Synodikon": shortly before his death by his orders there were
compiled full lists of the people murdered by him and his Oprichniki, which were then
distributed throughout all the Russian monasteries. All his sins against the nation Ivan took
upon himself and besought the holy monks to pray to God for the forgiveness of his
tormented soul.

The self-styled monasticism of Ivan the Terrible, a dark most grievous oppression over
Russia, tormented Saint Philip, who considered it impossible to mix together the earthly and

the heavenly, serving the cross and serving the sword. Even moreso was it, that Saint Philip
saw, how much unrepentant malice and envy was concealed beneathe the black hoods of the
Oprichniki. There were among them outright murderers, hardened in lawless bloodletting, and
profiteers in it for the rewards, rooted in sin and transgression. By the sufferance of God
history often is worked with the hands of the impious, and Ivan the Terrible as it were wanted
to whiten before God his black brotherhood, – the blood, spilled in the name of its thugs and
fanatics, cried out to heaven.

Saint Philip decided to oppose Ivan the Terrible. This was connected with a new wave of
executions in the years 1567-1568. In the Autumn of 1567, just as the tsar was setting out on a
campaign against Livonia, he learned about a boyar conspiracy. The plotters intended to seize
the tsar and deliver him over to the Polish king, who already was on the move with an army
towards Russian territory. Ivan the Terrible dealt severely with the conspirators and again he
shed much blood. It was bitter for Saint Philip, and the conscience of the Saint at length
compelled him boldly to enter into defense of the executed. The final rift occurred in the
Spring of 1568. On the Sunday of the Veneration of the Cross, 2 March 1568, when the tsar
with his Oprichniki entered the Uspenie (Dormition) cathedral, as was their custom in
monastic garb, Saint Philip refused to bless him, and began openly to denounce the lawless
acts committed by the Oprichniki: "Metropolitan Philip did instruct the sovereign of the
enmity in Moscow concerning the Oprichnina."The accusations of the Vladyka shattered the
harmony of the church service. Ivan the Terrible in a rage said: "Thou wouldst oppose us? We
shall see thine firmness! I have been too soft on you," – retorted the tsar, according to eyewitnesses.

The tsar began to show ever greater cruelty in persecuting all those that opposed him.
Executions followed one after the other. The fate of the saintly confessor was sealed. But Ivan
the Terrible wanted to observe a canonical semblance of propriety. The Boyar duma
obediently carried out the decision to have a trial over the Primate of the Russian Church. A
cathedral trial-court was set up over Metropolitan Philip in the presence of a thinned-out
Boyar duma. False witnesses were found: and to the deep sorrow of the Saint, these were
monks of the Solovetsk monastery beloved by him, his former students and novices. They
accused Saint Philip of a multitude of transgressions, even including sorcery. "I am come
upon the earth, just like all my ancestors, – humbly answered the Saint, – prepared to suffer
for truth." Having refuted all the accusations, the holy sufferer attempted to halt the trial by
declaring voluntarily to resign the metropolitan dignity. But his abdication was not accepted.
New abuse awaited the Martyr. Even after bringing forth a sentence of life imprisonment,
they compelled Saint Philip to serve Liturgy in the Uspensk cathedral. This was on 8
November 1568. In the midst of the service the Oprichniki burst into the temple, they publicly
read the council sentence of condemnation, and then abused the Saint, tearing from him the
hierarchical vestments, they dressed him in rags, dragged him out of the church and drove him
off on a simple peasant's sledge to the Theophany monastery. For a long while they oppressed
the Martyr in the cellars of the Moscow monasteries, the feet of the elder they shoved into
stocks, they held him in chains, and put an heavy chain upon his neck. Finally, they drove him
off to the Tver Otroch monastery. And there a year afterwards, on 23 December 1569, the
Saint accepted a Martyr's death at the hands of Maliuta Skuratov. Only three days before this
the holy elder foresaw the finish of his earthly efforts and communed the Holy Mysteries. His
relics were committed to earth initially there at the monastery, beyond the church altar. Later
on they were transferred to the Solovetsk monastery (11 August 1591) and from there – to
Moscow (3 July 1652).

The memory of Sainted Philip was celebrated by the Russian Church from the year 1591, on
the day of his Martyr's end – 23 December. From 1660 the celebration was transferred to 9

January.

ruines majestueuses secouent notre conscience.

Sainted Anatolios, Patriarch of Constantinople, was born at Alexandria in the 2nd half of the
IV Century – during a time, when many representatives of illustrious Byzantine families
awakened ardently in the faith and in the armament of Greek philosophic wisdom they strove
to serve the Church of Christ. Having received a philosophic education, Saint Anatolios
accepted the priestly dignity as deacon under Sainted Cyril of Alexandria (account is under 18
January). Together with Saint Cyril, Anatolios was present at the Third OEcumenical Council
at Ephesus in the year 431 (Comm. 9 September), at which the holy fathers condemned the
false-teaching of Nestorius.

Saint Anatolios remained a deacon at Alexandria and after the death of Saint Cyril (+ 444),
when the cathedra-seat of the archbishop of Constantinople was occupied by Dioskoros, who
supported another heresy being spread by Eutykhios, affirming that the Divine nature in
Christ had fully swallowed up and absorbed His human nature, leaving nothing of it behind.
This false teaching undermined the very basis of the Church's teaching about the salvation and
redemption of humankind [trans. note: since "what is not assumed upon is not saved," if
Christ be by nature Divine only and not human by nature, then Christ-God will have died and
risen in vain for the salvation of humankind in its human nature, and even the Incarnation of
Christ would be rendered heretically docetic]. In the year 449 Dioskoros with his adherents
convened at Ephesus an heretical "Robbers Council," having received also the support of the
emperor. The advocate of Orthodoxy, Saint Flavian, the Patriarch of Constantinople, was

deposed and deprived of dignity.

Chosen then to the Constantinople cathedra-seat, Saint Anatolios zealously set about the
restoration of the purity of Orthodoxy. Saint Anatolios already in the year 450 at the Local
Council in Constantinople ventured a condemnation of the heresy of Eutykhios and
Dioskoros. Having died in exile, the Patriarch-confessor Flavian was enumerated into the
ranks of the Saints and his relics transferred to the capital.

In the following year, 451, with the active participation of Patriarch Anatolios, the Fourth
OEcumenical Council was convened at Chalcedon. The fathers of the Chalcedon Council
affirmed the dogma about the worship of the Lord Jesus Christ, "perfect in Divinity and
perfect in humanity, true God and true man, made known in two natures – without mingling,
without change, indivisibly, inseparably" (Greek: "asugkhutos, atreptos, adiairetos,
akhoristos"; Slavonic: "neslitno, neizmenno, nerazdel'no, nerazluchno").

But heresies still long vexed the ecclesial world. In incessant struggle with false-teachings and
ardent for truth, Patriarch Anatolios died in the year 458.

From the canon-rule actions taken, there was elaborated for the sainted-hierarch the 28th
Canon of the Fourth OEcumenical Council about the equal-honour of the Constantinople
patriarchal throne to that of the throne of Old Rome, and likewise a statement of this Canon to
Saint Leo, Pope of Rome (440-461). Within the jurisdiction of the Patriarch of
Constantinople, in accord with the 28th Canon, was put the Churches of Asia Minor, Greece
and the Black Sea region, and likewise all new Churches, that might arise among the nations
of these regions. And by this also the Russian Church was deliberately included into the
ecclesial enumeration of the Orthodox Churches.

Saint Anatolios likewise made a large contribution to the literary treasury of the Orthodox
Church. By his prayerful inspiration and theological profundity there are in Divine-services
stikhi-verses for Sundays, for certain feastdays of the Lord (the Nativity and the Theophany of
Christ), and Martyr-days (to Saint Panteleimon the Healer, to Saint George the Victory-
Bearer, to Saint Demetrios of Thessalonika). In the Divine-service books they are designated
simply as "Anatoliev" verses.

SAINT GUTHIERN (OU GURTHIERN, GOUZHIERN), ROI DE CAMBRIE PUIS
SOLITAIRE (+500)

[Section I]

lieu.

d'autres Reliques.
SAINT MOINE ALEXANDRE L'ACÉMÈTE (+430) 23 février – 3 juillet
The Monk Alexander, First-Head of the "Unceasing Vigilance" Monastery, was born in Asia
and received his education at Constantinople. He spent some time in military service but,
sensing a call to other service, he left the world and accepted monastic tonsure in one of the
Syrian wilderness monasteries near Antioch, under the guidance of hegumen Elias. He spent
four years in strict obedience and monastic effort, after which he received from the hegumen
blessing to dwell in the wilderness. Going into the wilderness, the monk took with him
nothing from the monastery, except the Gospel. The monk then asceticised in the wilderness
for seven years. Afterwards, the Lord summoned him to preach to pagans. The Saint
converted to Christ the local city-ruler named Rabul, who afterwards was granted the dignity
of bishop and for 30 years occupying the bishop's cathedra-chair at the city of Edessa.
Together with Rabul all the local inhabitants accepted Baptism, and before receiving the
sacrament they burned their idols in the city-square. Having confirmed the newly-converted in
the faith, the Monk Alexander again went into the wilderness, where by chance he came upon
a cave of robbers. Fearless of the death that might threaten him, he preached the Gospel to
them and urged them to repent. And actually, all the robbers sincerely did repent, the accepted
holy Baptism, and their cave they transformed into a monastery, where they dwelt in prayer
and penitence. The Monk Alexander appointed an hegumen for them, gave them a monastic
rule, and he himself resettled still farther in the wilderness. For several years he lived in
complete solitude. But even there lovers of solitude began to throng to the monk. A monastery
emerged, numbering 400 monks. Desiring at this monastery to establish uninterrupted praise
to the Lord, the monk prayed for three years, that the Creator would reveal to him His will,
and having then received the revelation, he initiated at the monastery the following order: all
the monks were divided into 24 watches of prayer. Changing shifts each hour, day and night
they sang in two choirs the Psalms of David, interrupting this only for the times of making
Divine-services. The monastery received the name "Unceasing Vigilance," since ascetics
throughout the cycle of both day and night sang praise to God.

The Monk Alexander guided the monastery on the Euphrates for twelve years. Afterwards,
having left as its hegumen one of his disciples, the experienced elder Trophymos, he set out
with some chosen brethren through the cities bordering on Persia, preaching the Gospel
among the pagans. After this missionary journeying, the Monk Alexander lived with his
monks for a certain while at Antioch. There he built for the city-dwellers a church, and an
home for the sick and homeless, from the means which charitable Antiochians abundantly put

at his disposal. However, through the intrigues of the jealous, the Monk Alexander was
compelled to move away to Constantinople. Here he founded a new monastery, in which
likewise he initiated a monastic rule of "unceasing vigilance." The Monk Alexander and his
monks suffered at Constantinople under the Nestorian heretics, enduring beatings and
imprisonment. After this, when the storm of heretic unrest abated, the Monk Alexander spent
the last days of his life at the Constantinople monastery founded by him. He died in extreme
old age in about the year 430, after 50 years of incessant monastic effort. His commemoration
is also 23 February, which see.

SAINT NICODEME DU LAC KOZHE (+1640)
The Monk Nikodim of Kozheezersk, in the world Nikita, was born in the village of Ivan'kovo
near Rostov into a peasant family. While still in his youth, working with his father in the
fields, he heard the words: "Nikodim! Nikodim!" announcing his future monasticism.

After the death of his parents he learned the blacksmith craft in Yaroslavl' and then arrived in
Moscow. One time, going past Kulishka, Nikita stopped at the hut of the holy fool Ilia, who
upon seeing him cried out: "the Khuz'yugsk ascetic hath arrived." These words made a strong
impression upon Nikita, and he perceived them as a summoning to the monastic life. Having
given away everything he owned, he went to the archimandrite of the Chudov monastery,
Paphnutii, asking to be accepted into the number of the brethren.

In this monastery he accepted tonsure with the name Nikodim. For eleven years the monk was
an example to the brethren in humility, obedience, non-covetousness and brotherly love. In
1602 the hegumen of the monastery, Paphnutii, was made metropolitan of Sarsk, and he took
Nikodim with him. But the Saint was seeking for a solitary and ascetic life. A year afterwards,
with the blessing of the Vladyka, he set out to the north and at first entered the common-life

Kozheezersk monastery, in which he spent a year and an half.

His desire for quietude led him to the Rivulet Khuz'yuga, 5 versts distant from the
Kozheezersk monastery. There in a forest thicket he set up for himself a small cell and dwelt
in it without emerging for 35 years, in imitation of Paul the Thebian. In total quiet far off from
the world, the Saint made his strict rule of prayer for the world. He shared with the brethren of
the monastery the fruits of his labour, so also the fish, which he loved to catch on fishingtackle.
Wild deer walked without worry and fed around his hermitage. The Monk Nikodim
passed the night at prayer and only occasionally permitted himself to doze off now and then
whilst sitting up. By his austere efforts he attained to high spiritual abilities, – he acquired the
gift of tears and of uninterrupted prayer. God rewarded him with a graced perspicacity and the
power of healing the sick.

One time two radiant men appeared to Saint Nikodim: Sainted Alexei, Metropolitan of
Moscow, and the Monk Dionysii, Archimandrite of the Holy Trinity Sergiev Lavra, – in
angelic garb. They announced to the monk about the time of his going to the Lord, which
occurred in 40 days, on 3 July 1640. The relics of the Monk Nikodim rest beneathe a crypt in
the Bogoyavlenie-Theophany church of the Kozheezersk monastery. The life of the Saint was
recorded by his student, the priestmonk Iakov.

SAINT BASILE, ARCHEVÊQUE DE NOVGOROD (+1352)
Sainted Vasilii, Archbishop of Novgorod, by surname Kalika (meaning "destitute wanderer or
psalmodist"), was a priest at Novgorod and for his virtuous life was chosen to the Novgorod
cathedra-seat. Saint Vasilii was ordained archbishop of Novgorod by the holy Metropolitan
Theognist (+ 1353, Comm. 14 March) in Vladimir Volynsk in 1331. He headed the Novgorod
cathedra during a terrible time of princely quarrels and inner factions within the city itself.
Repeatedly he met with the Moscow Great-prince Ivan Kalita, inclining him towards peace
with Novgorod. In 1344, when at Novgorod there gathered simultaneously two councilcommittees,
hostile to each other, for throwing out the posadnik-mayor, the Saint made peace
between both sides. After two ruinous conflagrations occurred at Novgorod, Saint Vasilii
displayed archpastoral concern for the devastated city: from cathedral funds he helped restore
burnt-out buildings, he constructed a new bridge across the Vol'khov, and put monks at the
churches. At the Borisoglebsk temple in Novgorod was preserved an icon of the holy
nobleborn Princes Boris and Gleb, written by him. The self-sacrificing activity of Saint Vasilii
was commented upon by a contemporary – the chronicler, thus: "Grant him, O Lord, to live
many years upon this world and afterwards put him at Thine right side, – so much hath he
toiled for Thy Church."

The love of the Saint for the flock is quite clearly shown, when at the request of the Pskov
people he fearlessly went to their city during an epidemic of pestilential plague. Saint Vasilii
made Divine-services in three churches, then went about the city in church procession,
encouraging and comforting the fallen spirits of the inhabitants, but on the return journey to
Novgorod he himself sickened and died on 3 July 1352, having like a good pastor given his
soul for the sheep (Jn. 10: 11).

From his preserved works there is known his "Missive about Earthly Paradise," written in
1347 and directed to the Tver bishop Theodore the Good. With the name of holy Archbishop
Vasilii is connected the account about the white klobuk (head-piece), presented to the
Vladyka as a gift from the Patriarch of Constantinople. By tradition, this klobuk was entrusted
by the holy Equal-to-the-Apostles Constantine (+ 337, Comm. 21 May) to Saint Sylvester,

Pope of Rome (+ 335, account about him is under 2 January). The white klobuk of Saint
Vasilii was for the Russian Church a symbol of pre-eminent transfer of the spiritual centre of
Orthodoxy from Old Rome, – through New Rome, Tsar'grad (Constantinople), – to the Third
Rome, Moscow.
